SHIMA NO TAISHIKAN is a base for cultural exchange between urban area and rural area. It is a cultural bridge connecting you and a small island. It enables you to think of the people in a distant place and helps you to find that we’re actually connected. By being grateful for the bond that connected you and the others, the world would be warmer and more loving. The symbol mark of SHIMA NO TAISHIKAN represents our wish that it would be such a pleasant place for you.

The Future of Japan in Miniature

Ama-cho is one of the Oki islands located in the Sea of Japan approximately 60km north from the coast of Shimane Prefecture. We thought that the problems of Ama-cho with only 2300 population, like accelerating underpopulation, increased aging population, centralization, and industry decline would also be the problems of Japan in the future. Therefore, we started this project in order to actualize the vision to make a place for communication between the islanders and the urban people so that they can think about their future together.

Actualizing the Vision

We discussed what we can do in order to tell people the vision of SHIMA NO TAISHKAN to make it a communication tool for the islanders and the people in cities. First of all, we decided the process to design a logo mark based on the clear vision. The logo mark we designed expresses SHIMA NO TAISHIKAN’s wish to make the future that the islanders and the urban people can co-exist by using it as a cultural bridge for them, not just judging which would be more comfortable to live.

Results

Making an Environment We Can Get Actively Involved in Our Future

By clarifying the vision, a lot of people who have sympathized with our idea gathered to SHIMA NO TAISHIKAN. Our web branding project could make a contribution to SHIMA NO TAISHIKAN by making a place to think about their future. We’ll keep trying to seek our own definition of social sustainability and to expand the circle in order to make our future by ourselves.
