Launch your E-commerce site easily with Shopify

E-commerce Sites in the Spotlight
With the impact of COVID-19 and the stay-at-home requests that followed, many of us have likely been spending more time at home due to remote work and school closures.
Even people who used to be too busy with work to browse e-commerce sites at leisure now have more time thanks to remote work, and this is translating into actual purchases. Demand for e-commerce sites appears to be on the rise.

What is Shopify?
First, let us briefly explain what Shopify is. Shopify is an e-commerce platform operated by Shopify Inc., a company based in Canada. As of the end of 2019, more than one million merchants were using Shopify, with the platform deployed across over one million stores in 175 countries. Shopify established its Japanese subsidiary in November 2017, and in 2018 introduced a Japanese-language admin dashboard, making it possible to handle all operational tasks in Japanese. It has earned strong support from North American e-commerce operators looking for a sales channel beyond Amazon, the dominant player in the space, which has led some to nickname it the "Amazon killer."
Key features of Shopify
Now, let us introduce some of Shopify's many features.
Low Setup Costs—Easy to get started
Integration with Social Media and Rakuten Ichiba
Design quality
Rich functionality
Recommended Shopify themes
Now we'd like to introduce some recommended Shopify themes. Let's start with a free theme: Debut.
Debuthttps://themes.shopify.com/themes/debut/styles/light/preview
It's very simple, but well-suited to apparel, furniture, and interior-goods sites that want to showcase products beautifully. It also includes promotional banners, the ability to highlight recommended products on product pages, predictive search, and a customer testimonials feature—we were genuinely impressed by how much you can do with a free theme. You could continue using this theme as your store's permanent theme, or use it initially to experiment with the features and learn the ropes before moving to another theme.
Next, we'll introduce a paid theme: Canopy.

Canopy includes a quick-purchase feature that lets customers add desired items to their cart without leaving the current page, making it easy to use even for stores with a large number of products. It also comes with a built-in blog feature and the ability to showcase YouTube videos, making it a theme that can effectively communicate your brand's story.
What is Shopify Plus?
Have you heard of Shopify Plus, Shopify's enterprise plan? It's the top-tier Shopify plan, and here we'll introduce some of its features.
- Checkout customization
Shopify Plus allows you to edit checkout.liquid. By editing checkout.liquid, you can create custom input forms unique to your store on the checkout page, or modify the layout itself. - Access to automation tools
Shopify Plus gives you access to an automation tool called Shopify Flow. Shopify Flow can automate a variety of tasks—such as tagging users based on their purchase behavior, managing inventory, and handling domestic and international orders. There's no need for complex setup or code; you simply select actions in the admin dashboard, making automation easy to configure. - Access to a dedicated API
While standard Shopify plans place restrictions on the API, Shopify Plus removes those limits, providing five times the capacity and five times the speed of the standard specifications.
In addition, you can configure discount logic to apply at checkout, create, manage, and edit gift card codes, and enable seamless login between separate sites and your Shopify store using the same email address—all through Shopify Plus-exclusive API calls.
Shopify Plus has a higher monthly fee than the standard Shopify plans, but with infrastructure capable of processing more than 10,000 transactions per minute, it's the recommended choice for e-commerce sites that handle a high volume of products and require large-scale development, as well as for sites looking to expand overseas by launching multiple region-specific stores.
Examples of sites built with Shopify
Finally, we'd like to introduce some e-commerce sites built with Shopify. We'll cover examples from both Japan and overseas, looking at the actual reasons each company chose Shopify and just how creative the design can get.
Tsuchiya Kabanhttps://tsuchiya-kaban.jp/
A long-established brand selling leather goods, including school satchels (randoseru) and bags for adults. They had previously renewed their site only once every few years, but decided to adopt Shopify because its highly extensible apps allowed them to incorporate a wide range of tools quickly—from initial validation through to implementation—within short timeframes.
SOÉJUhttps://soeju.com/
SOÉJU is a salon where professional stylists provide fashion counseling and personal styling, either in person or online. The physical store is essentially a showroom: if customers find an item they like on the spot, they can use a tablet to access the e-commerce site and make a purchase, and with "Amazon Pay" they can complete the purchase in as few as two steps. Many consumers want to check the feel, material, and size of apparel-related products in advance, so we expect this kind of omnichannel approach—combining "showroom," "e-commerce," and "Amazon Pay"—to grow even more in the years ahead as a way to meet consumer needs.
FETCHING FIELDShttps://www.fetchingfields.com/
This is the site of a specialty store for organic pet food. The site is very easy to use, with backgrounds that tie in with the packaging and intuitive navigation to reviews and the help page. The product images look so appetizing that you almost forget you're looking at dog food.
MASTER&DYNAMIChttps://www.masterdynamic.com/
This is the e-commerce site of a specialty headphone and speaker store. The digital font design and the way products are presented on the product pages are both refined, resulting in an e-commerce site with a distinctly premium feel.
Conclusion
In this article, we've covered Shopify's features and a few real-world examples of its adoption—what did you think? Many people may feel anxious about the prospect of building an e-commerce site, thinking it must be difficult, but Shopify is both simple and feature-rich, making it easy to build and operate an e-commerce site. We at BOEL also build e-commerce sites using Shopify as the platform. If you are considering an e-commerce site, please feel free to reach out to us through our contact form.
