#design#企画#end user#企画発想
When we think about the abilities that will truly be needed in the future, one important skill stands out: the ability to combine existing ideas to create new ideas and new value — in other words, planning and creative thinking skills. In this article, we will explore tips for generating ideas and planning concepts, skills that are likely to become essential in every field as AI continues to advance.

Why Is Planning Important?

As mentioned earlier, let’s take a closer look at why planning is important and why the ability to create strong ideas has become such a necessary skill.

People today live in a world filled with products and services, and many material desires are already satisfied.
As a result, people tend to be less attached to possessions than in the past.
At the same time, consumers have developed the ability to search through an overwhelming number of options and identify what is truly valuable or worthwhile.
On the other hand, they also tend to ignore products and services that fail to capture their interest.

Because consumers can often understand the intentions behind products and even recognize a company’s true motivations, businesses must now consider not only the product itself, but also the production process and the impact it has on society when offering products and services.
In other words, society has shifted from valuing quantity to valuing quality.

In today’s saturated society, the ability to discover new value and pursue truly meaningful ideas has become increasingly important.
This is where planning and creative thinking become essential.
By combining existing ideas to create new value, and by improving the quality of what we offer, planning skills will continue to play an increasingly important role in the future.

Have You Heard of Pattern Language?

Pattern Language is a theory proposed by the architect Christopher Alexander.
He identified recurring rules and structures found in buildings and cities as “patterns,” and developed a method for describing and sharing them as a “language.”
Alexander believed that good cities are built upon good rules, and he encouraged communities to share those ideas and think together about how cities should be designed.

Sharing knowledge as a language provides two major benefits.
First, it makes it possible to clearly document the experience and practical knowledge of experts, helping raise the overall skill level of a group.
Second, by creating a common language, people can more easily discuss complex relationships and ideas that were previously difficult to share or explain.

Pattern Language has since expanded beyond architecture and is now also used in fields such as education and design.
In this article, we will explore planning and idea generation based on the concepts of Pattern Language 3.0.

1. What Do You Want to Achieve Through Your Plan?

To consistently create high-quality ideas and proposals, it is important to establish a clear core concept or guiding principle for your plan.
Having this foundation helps you move forward without losing direction.

When developing a proposal, it is easy to become influenced by existing ideas or to overload the concept with too many elements because the information has not been properly organized.
However, by having your own criteria for evaluating ideas, you can objectively assess the quality of your proposal, identify what is needed to improve it, and refine the content more effectively.

Having your own standards and perspective also makes it easier to judge the quality of your ideas, while allowing you to add originality and a unique identity to your proposals.

2. Gather Information

Become the End User, Don’t Just Think Like One

By actually becoming the end user, you can often evaluate things from a much more critical and realistic perspective.
For example, you might buy a coat for 10,000 yen and think, “It’s inexpensive, but the design probably won’t still look good next year,” or “The stitching is rough, and the fabric doesn’t suit the season’s weather.”
By experiencing products and services firsthand, many areas that need improvement naturally become visible.

It’s Also Important to Gather Information Firsthand

Information provided by others often reflects that person’s own perspective and biases.
By visiting places yourself and observing things firsthand, you can discover new viewpoints and information that cannot be found through online sources alone.

3. Create the Plan or Concept

Even if you introduce something completely new, it may not always match the client’s needs or identity.
By creating proposals based on careful research and an understanding of the client’s history and background, you can develop ideas that feel authentic and meaningful to that particular client.

Rather than focusing only on users who are already satisfied, it is important to think about what can be offered to users who still face problems or unmet needs.
Doing so can help increase revenue by attracting customers that competitors have overlooked, while also providing services that better match actual demand.

The key to creating unique ideas lies in uncovering hidden value and identifying areas where the balance between supply and demand is not aligned.
Even if each individual idea is already familiar, combining and connecting them in new ways can create entirely new value.

4. Strengthening and Refining Your Plan

Keep Asking “Why?”

When we come up with a good idea, it is easy to move straight into developing the proposal without questioning it further.
However, it is important to pause and ask yourself whether the idea is truly effective and meaningful.

Likewise, rather than giving up simply because something seems difficult, continue asking why it is difficult and what elements are necessary to make it achievable.
By repeatedly questioning and refining your ideas in this way, you can discover new solutions and create new forms of value.

This process not only helps generate original ideas, but also builds the ability to solve similar problems in future situations.

Clearly Summarize the Main Selling Point

By training yourself to communicate the key points of a proposal in a simple and concise way, you develop the ability to identify and express the true essence of an idea.
Once you understand the core value of a concept, it becomes much easier to create future proposals based on that essential foundation.

Summary

What did you think?
This article was inspired by PROJECT DESIGN PATTERNS by Takashi Iba and Fumio Kajiwara, and introduced some of the book’s key ideas in a simplified form.
If you are interested in improving your planning and creative thinking skills, we highly recommend reading the book for a deeper understanding of the concepts.

Planning is not only important in creative industries, but is also a valuable skill across many different professions and fields.
By learning ways of thinking and approaches to idea generation, you can develop new perspectives and evaluate things more thoughtfully.

We hope this article has been helpful in some way.

By doing so, you can become capable of proposing new ideas and new forms of value, while also developing the ability to solve similar challenges in the future.
